Rivers state governor in Nigeria, Nyesom Wike has banned prostitution and nightclubs in his state. The governor announced the controversial decision in his new year message to residents of Rivers state..

The governor described these practices as one that have “harmful effects….on the moral development of the children and society at large.”

Reports further indicated that, the new ban also extends to night trading along Abacha Road and environs which include Casablanca area.

Governor Wike also stated that a taskforce will be created to enforce the ban. In the same vein, he gave orders to the state security agencies to go ahead and prosecute violators of the ban.

People are however skeptical about the decision. To some, the ban may end as soon as the governors term ends in 2023.
